Frieze Masters brings together several thousand years of art in a unique, contemporary context. See and buy art from over 130 of the world’s leading galleries specialising in: Antiquities, Asian Art, Ethnographic Art, Illuminated Manuscripts, Medieval Art, Modern and Post-War, Old Masters and 19th Century, Photography, Sculpture and Wunderkammer.
Following a successful debut in 2014, The Weiss Gallery - leading dealer in Tudor, Stuart and North European Old Master portraiture - is delighted to return to Frieze Masters this year, from 14-18 October 2015. The Weiss Gallery will bring a number of other artworks to Frieze Masters, namely: a portrait of Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex by Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger and a rare period portrait of Henry VIII. Dr. Pamela Tudor-Craig has suggested that this striking early portrait of Henry VIII, indeed one of the very earliest portraits of Henry as King, dated 1527, was most likely part of a set of the great monarchs of the early sixteenth century. The gallery’s portrait is rare as one of only seven surviving panel portraits of Henry that are known from the first decade of his reign.
Over the past decades, The Weiss Gallery has made many notable sales, which now grace distinguished private and public painting collections around the world. At Frieze Masters last year, the gallery sold The Last Supper, a monumental masterpiece by Pieter Jansz Pourbus, to a new buyer; the painting had an asking price of £650,000.
